Our adventure started on the French Riviera near Monte Carlo and took us on the winding D-roads of France, on a journey of discovery, all the way to Normandy.

The fabulous route took us from Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the south coast, along some iconic stages from the classic Monte Carlo Rally and high up into the mountains to Chorges in the centre of Provence, where the hotel had fabulous views across the Lac de Serre Poncon.

The road took us on to Nantua, across amazing mountain passes and through picturesque French villages.  Nantua is found at the head of Lac de Nantua, in the southern foothills of the Jura Mountains and is famous for its leather and shoemaking.

The 2CV’s then headed for Sancerre, leaving the mountains for the lowlands but still keeping to the scenic small country roads.  Sancerre is situated on a hilltop and has beautiful old houses with cobbled streets, and there we found Hotel Panoramic, perched high on a hill, offering wonderful views of the surrounding vineyards and farmland. The La Tour restaurant served a delicious dinner with lovely local wines to match.

The following day found us heading north to Chartres, stopping at a patisserie for a baguette for lunch and enjoying the ever-changing scenery.  The Chartres en Lumiere was on that night and we enjoyed the wonderfully illuminated building all around town with numerous sideshows and huge floating colourful animals being manoeuvred through the crowds by teams of people with long sticks.

On the final day we headed for Caen and the ferry home to Portsmouth – so much had happened in those 5 nights and 6 days but there was no doubt in everyone’s minds that it had been an exciting and memorable adventure!
