VECTIS Rally – 3-4 May 2022

It was an early start with Bacon Butties at 8.30am on a misty morning in May. The participants collected their bags with roadbook, quiz, hats, etc and prepared for the briefing. With the briefing behind them, they set off on a route that took them on the little back roads of Hampshire, over towards Winchester and then down the Test Valley to Lymington where there was a stop for lunch. Not everyone made it to lunch but improvisation being the name of the game, there is nothing wrong with standing with a plastic plate, ladened with delicious food and waiting for the ferry to Yarmouth at the Lymington port! The Isle of Wight is a fabulous island to drive around and the route took us along the beautiful southern coast line, with the participants looking out for picture quiz answers, through Bembridge and finally to Fishbourne and the Lakeside Park Hotel and Spa. That night a double birthday was celebrated, speeches made and prizes awarded and stories of that days adventures shared. The following morning had everyone heading for Cowes and the Chain Ferry Floating Bridge which transported everyone to the West side and a tour of the tiny streets of Cowes. The route took us inland and then back to the passenger ferry at Fishbourne for the ferry to Portsmouth. On arrival at Portsmouth, everyone drove along the sea front and then up through Portsmouth onto Portsdown Hill Road with its fabulous view of the Solent and the Isle of Wight. A delicious pub lunch was provided by the Red Lion in Chalton, before heading back along the foot of the Southdowns, via the very narrow lanes, and back to base. What a journey!

“We really enjoyed the magical well-planned route through Hants, Sussex and the Isle of Wight. Even the car seemed to be enjoying itself! The red and white livery of the cars was eye-catching and so many bystanders waved at us as we passed. It was a joy to see everyone enjoying themselves with the novelty of driving 2CV’s at a slower pace, through some truly beautiful countryside. It really was the best fun I have ever had on four wheels!” – John and Amanda
